This quote means that it wasn't his intention to leave. He knew that these basketball players knew enough  & he didn't think they needed him. Always do whats right for yourself. Just because other people decided to do the wrong things doesn't mean you should follow. If you want something in life you have to succeed for it , reach you goal without anyone bringing you down. Just because others dont succeed doesn't mean you cant.  Always be aware of those who are around you , for example if someone decided to ditch school with their friends. Dont follow their footsteps because you'll have to deal with bad consequences. Always do whats best for yourself. Keep in mind no one ever stays at the end.
